In 1958, learning of the U.S. Army's intent to sell surplus military equipment, my dad, Bill Ryan, and five of his brothers banded together, pooled their money and bought a khaki-colored canvas eight-man World War II army tent, complete with ropes, roll-up sides, poles and a large flap-covered door with the words 'U.
